Federal State Budgetary Institution "Academician I. S. GRAMBERG All-Russia Scientific Research Institute for Geology and Mineral Resources of the Ocean" (FSBI "VNIIOKEANGEOLOGIA"), today is known as base scientific institution of Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation and the Federal Agency for Subsoil Use of the Russian Federation (Rosnedra) in the field of the geological study of the Continental Shelf, World Ocean, Arctic and Antarctic.
FSBI “VNIIOkeangeologia” plays a significant role in realization of the provisions of the “Marine Doctrine of the Russian Federation for the period up to the year of 2020” endorsed by the President of Russia on July 27, 2002 and government’s policy documents to ensure resource (mineral raw materials) and geopolitical interests of our country.

The Ministry of Geology of the USSR Decision №328 of July 23, 1981 approved the conversion of the Scientific Research Institute of Geology of the Arctic to the Federal State Unitary Enterprise «The All-Union (now the All-Russia) Scientific Research Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources of the World Ocean» which on the July 07, 2003 was named after an outstanding scientist, the director of the Institute in 1972-2002 academician I.S. Gramberg.
The recognition of the emeritus “The dual subordination status” (Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia (MPR) Academy of Sciences) in 1992 revealed the high scientific authority of the Institute.
According to decree No. 2062-p dated 15 October 2015, the enterprise FSUE «The All-Russia Scientific Research Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources of the World Ocean named after academician I.
